Our intention with this book is to assist in making plant production more successful. During the so-called "green revolution", in the decades following the Second World War, the quantity of collectable crop in plant production increased by an order of magnitude due to intensive fertilization, plant protection and development of superior stocks with considerably higher productive capacity. Today the employed species have genetically higher productive capacity than we usually utilize, which means the average yield of the species can be increased considerably with the use of proper agricultural techniques.
The crucial elements of the agricultural technique are: soil cultivation to establish good soil conditions and well timed application of plant protection and plant nutrition. The success of plant production hinges on how expertly and how efficiently are those processes carried out. At the same time these interventions should not cause harm to the environment, they should rather protect it; because we consider the soil - the basis of agricultural production and life on the Earth - as if we had borrowed it from our grandchildren.
This book makes an effort to present some knowledge of soil science, agrochemistry and microbiology in an easily understandable way, so that more can be learned and understood about soil life. With this knowledge we can understand the main points of bacterial fertilization and microbial inoculation, and the need for their application as well.
The main concept of biological soil fertility management is known: without healthy soil life, soil fertility cannot be established. And soil fertility is continuously needed for realizing the expected success in plant production, as well as for the production of healthier food.
We hope this book will be useful and interesting for farmers - and would help them on their own farms to consciously maintain or even improve soil fertility.
